Taunggyi |
|
Situated at 1430 meters, the
pine-clad hill station of Taunggyi
provides a cool break form the heat
of the plains, Capital of the Shan
State, the town set at 1400 m and 28
km north east of Inle lake. |
|
Taunggyi
is close to many places of interest
that will tempt the travelers, such
as the scenic hill station of Kalaw
and the magnificent Pindaya Caves
famous for thousands of ancient
Buddha images. For those interested
in Shan State’s cultures, the modest
Shan cheroot factory called Flying
Tiger Mashua on a side street south
of the Myodaw Cinema. The
hand-rolling technique is
impressive, and cigar bundlers are
able to bunch 50 cigars in bundles. |

Pindaya |
|
Pindaya is in Taunggyi in southern
Shan State. It is located 45 miles
north of Kalaw Township. Pindaya is
a place of picturesque beauty with
many scenic spots. As soon as |

one
enters Pindaya a lake known as
Poktaloke Kan come into view and
this Lake, surrounded by huge the
Shwe-Umin Pagoda, built on the slope
of the hill. The caves of Pagoda are
seated uncountable number of seated
Buddha Images. In the caves are
Buddha Images of various sizes some
curved on the face of the rock and
others placed in niches in the walls
of the cave. At the mouth of the
cave is about 50 feet high. Water
can be seen seeping out from the
walls of the cave and pools of water
are formed on the floor and are
known as Natyaykan. There is also an
underground tunnel inside the end is
supposed to reach Bagan. |

Pindaya can be reached by road from
Kalaw. On the way to Kalaw one will
find hillocks here and there and
covered with pine forests which are
really beautiful to see. On the
market days, the products of the
region and crops cultivated by the
national races are sold and are can
find many different national races

Kalaw |
|
Kalaw - 1,400 meters above
sea-level- is a beautiful hill
station in the midst of rolling
hills and pine forests. Long ago it
was summer resort for the European expatriates and rich |

local people. 71 km west of Taunggyi, Kalaw
is 660 km from Yangon. There
are regular
domestic flights to Heho, where you
can proceed to Kalaw by car.
Kalaw still boasts colonial-era
cottages and villas. Its environs
are upon the Palaung villages where
the namesake ethnic people still
live in Long houses. They are
Buddhists, and wear beautifully
woven costumes of deep reds, greens
and black. There are also several
enchanting pagodas and temples. |

Inle lake |
|
Inle Lake is the most famous scenic
spot in the Shan State. It is about
30 km south of Taunggyi, capital of
the Shan State. The lake is 22.4 km
long and 10.2 km wide, shallow and
extremely picturesque. It is studded
with floating islands formed by the
growth and decay of vegetation. It
is the famous for its unique
leg-rowers, floating villages and
colorful markets and festivals. Even
when it is not festival time, it is
very interesting to observe the
Inthas living on the lake with their
houses on stilts, floating farms,
the floating markets and
silk-weaving home-industries. The
famous Ngaphe Chaung Monastery also
known as Jumping Cat Monastery,
where a dozen cats living in the
monastery have been trained by the
monks to jump through a ring on
call. Phaung-daw-oo Pagoda in the
Inle Lake is also very famous. It is
the shrine of five Buddha images.
Phaung-daw-oo Pagoda festival is
held every years during the month of
October with great pageantry. |

Kakku |
|
Kakku is a particular pagoda
especially worshipped by tradional
race Pa-oh and Shans in the Sothern
Shan State. It is situated 26 miles
afar at southern side of Taunggyi, a
capital city of Shan State. Kakku is
surrounded by 2000 stupas built to
mark its distinctive appearance.
Area of flat ground around Kakku
pagoda has about one square
kilometer and the place is ever
clean, pleasant and beauty. |

This Kakku Pagoda has basis
background notable emerging events,
whether actual or legendary tale
whatever it may be ever since
existence, Pa-oh and other national
tribes are believing it is true and
all people have reverence for sacred
relics and worship the pagoda. One
day in the long time ago, a native
Shan farmer couple found a ray of
light from the nearby bush
wonderfully in the evenings when
they got out off their residential
bamboo-hut. Being curious to know
what it was the cleared the bushes
and found nothing but in usual time
the ray of light came out bright
from the same place of earth.
Assiduously they dug the earth and
looked for the rays by using their
farming tools, mattock, shovel and
hoe. But their efforts made were in
vain. Unexpectedly, the one pig
among the near pack approached them
and helped as much as it could with
the helped of pig, the relics of
Lord Buddha were found finally. |
|
Then the said relics of Lord Buddha
were enshrined and pagoda was built
by the said Leading Shan couple.
Hence the name given was "Wet-ku"
which means “pig-help”. Long after
this, the name is changed to Kakku
but it has the same meaning. |
|
To ascend this Kakku pagoda on the
mound has two stairs, one in
northern side and another at
south-eastern side. There has by the
Kings in Konbound dynasty in 16th
century. From that time onwards
additional stupas has been increased
to a number 2500. From the place of
this Kakku pagoda if it is seen
around a pleasant mountaneous view
will be seen with forest, trees,
hills, dales and valleys. |

Mrauk-Oo |
|
Situated in the northern part of
Rakhine State and north of Sittwe;
capital of the State. Discover the
unknown Land Mrauk-Oo of Rakhine (Arakan)
(on the West Coast of Myanmar) and
the marvelous ruins of Mrauk-Oo with
its fantastic surroundings which is
one of the artistic jewels of
Myanmar. It has the famous party
city for trading with Portuguese,
Spanish etc. Visit the remains of
the old capital of Vesali from 2nd
BC to 8th century and Mrauk-Oo from
15th to 18th century shows the
unique architecture and sculpture of
once highly cultured Rakhine of
Myanmar. |

Most impressive are the massive
Shittaung, said to contain 84,000
relics and the interior walls
engraved with over 1000 figures from
Buddhist literatures. The Andaw
Thein was built to keep one of the
Buddha’s molar teeth brought from
SriLanka, and the Htukkant Thein a
massive grey building similar to a
huge bunker is a shelter for the
monks during wartimes. |

Putao |
|
Northern Myanmar is a magical
kingdom. In the northern tip of
Myanmar, set in a hill top near the
Himalayas is a pretty and peaceful
town 420m above sea level, Putao.
There are still many kilometers of
mountain ranges and jungle beyond,
right up to the pointed crown of the
country. Villages are scattered on
these mountain-sides. The area is
unique in the diversity of flora and
fauna. Mount Hkakabo
Razi (nearly 5881 m ) and Mount
Phungan ( over 3500 m ) are
snow- capped |

peaks rarely conquered
by men, and which fascinates
climbers from all around the world. Hkakabo Razi national park is
located in Naungmung township of
Kachin State, the northernmost state
of Myanmar. It occupies on area of
1,472 square miles. The year of
establishment is 1996. Forest
include evergreen forests, hill pine
forests, moist upper mixed deciduous
forests. In addition to rare species
such as Takin, Musk Deer, Blue
Sheep, Black Barking Deer, Phet Gyi
( Muntiaus putaoensis ), mammal
species and insects such as
butterflies are present. |

The Khamti Shan, Lisu and Rawang
nationalities who live in the area
still uphold the traditional way of
life of their ancestors. They are
beautiful people with clean cut
features and clear complexion, their
gazes steady but friendly. The
morning market is the most crowded
time for this sleepy town, Meat,
fowl and fresh vegetables and
luscious fruits in season are sold
there, together with herbs and roots
collected from the forests. |

Putao stands with the snowy
mountains around it, which to the
people must look as glorious as the
abode of gods. The ice-capped
mountains, purity of the air, and
the clearness of the river’s waters
and the simple and sincere nature of
the people make Putao truly a unique
place. |

|
Chin State |
|
The Chin State is situated in the
Western part of Myanmar. This
mountainous region has very few flat
lands. The average height of the
hills are between 5000 and 9000
feet. The famous Mount Victoria has
a height of 10,400 feet. The Chin
State has a land area of 13,907
square miles and the population
numbered only 470,000 people. Most
of them are Chins but Myanmar and
other ethnic minorities also reside
there. Terraced farming is practiced
and rice, rye, maize, sericulture,
cotton, coffee and apples are
cultivated in the hills. The main
cottage industry in this region is
traditional weaving. |

The capital of Chin State is Haka.
Other towns are Falam, Tiddim,
Tunzan, Htantalan, Matupi, Paletwa
and Mindat. The Chin nationals are
great hunters and warriors. The
Chins believe in Christianity and
animism. Spiritual worship rites in
honour of their incestors and
post-harvest festivals are merrily
held annually. |

Nat Ma Taung (mountain) national
park is located in Kanpet-let,
Mindut and Matupi townships of
southern Chin State. It covers an
area of 279 square miles, and is
established in 1994. Forests include
hill evergreen forests, moist upper
mixed deciduous forests, pine forest
(above) and hill savanna. Mammals
such as tiger, bear, wild boar,
leopard, goat, scrow, gibbon, etc.
and 159 bird species, reptiles and
butterfly are present. |

Ngapali
Beach |
|
Ngapali beach lies about four miles
away from Thandwe. The jet plane
takes about 30 minutes from Yangon
to the area. Ngapali is not a
Myanmar word. The British occupied
Rakhine of the end of the first
Anglo-Myanmar War in 1826. After the
British occupation Italian arrived
at the beach near Thandwe. As the
beach was very beautiful and
pleasant like Italian town of
Naples, they named it Naples. With
the passage of time the Tran
vocalization was degenerated into
Ngapali. |

The beach of the surface is smooth
and water is shallow. The rise or
fall of the tide is not rapid. There
are no dangerous animals in the
water. No winds blow too hand nor
waves run too high. Moreover, with
hand ground under water mud is
non-existent. The area is clear of
dusts and litter-free. White sand of
the beach serves as the best ground
for sun-bathing, rest and
recreation. The beach stretching
about two miles can also serve as
the play ground for different kinds
of sports and games. Fresh air
pervades everywhere. A stroll along
the beach is advisable for those
curious about small urchins, crabs,
sea shells and mussels. One may get
on opportunity to observe the most
enchanting beauty at Ngapalis that
is, the scene of the sunset.
Professional or amateur
photographers should not miss this
opportunity. Oil palms abound in the
area and coconut juice is plenty. It
is most refreshing to drink to
coconut juice after a swim. |

In Thandwe, there are some famous
pagodas. Scenic beauty is also
there. The town’s market is a place
of interest. Visitors can study
products and experience the life of
the local populace. |

Chaung
Tha Beach |
|
Chaung Tha Beach is located 40km to
the west of Pathein (Bassein) in
Ayeyarwaddy Division. It is a very
convenient drive from Yangon via
Pathein taking about 5 hours. There
are bungalow type hotels along the
beach with modern facilities. |

It is a newly opened beach about
48km from Pathein. This unspoilt
beach stretches 15km of white sand
and blue sea. There are newly
constructed bungalows with local
flavour but equipped with modern

Kantharyar Beach |
|
Kantharyar is a pleasant beach
resort for those who want to get
away from the noise and hustle,
bustle life of crowded city. Located
in Rakhine State, 200 km from
Yangon, can be reached by car in
about 6 hours. It is only 104 km to
the south of Ngapali beach. For the
more adventurous,
you can there. You can
get there on a daily flight to Thandwe, |

lasting about half an hour
and thence either detour to Ngapali
or continue to Kantharyar by road in
there hours drive. On the way to
Kantharyar, you can enjoy viewing
paddy fields, orchards, tropical
bamboo forests, peaceful and
pleasant villages. You can go for a
walk along 2 km long deserted beach;
or go to the reef or several fishing
islands about 1 km from the shore.
For bird watching enthusiasts,
Kantharyar is an ideal place with
tropical birds anol migratory ones. |
